On the Rise in Georgia:
What better way to celebrate Halloween (Nubzilla's new year) than by shining the spotlight on Nubzilla's newest find, High Cotton. From deep in the south comes a sound that's sure to tickle your ears. Lead by Laura's powerful voice, this trio serves up a healthy dose of toe-tapping rhythms and southern hospitality with their cleverly-crafted tunes. You're sure to keep singing their songs for days and days after just one listen.

Artist's biography
A little Southern hospitality and Americana wisdom awaits you in our music! This "Southern Belle" somehow got caught up with these two Northern Carpet Baggers and things haven't been the same since! Great music is created out of the blending of the most surprising things!...that is what we think you will find in our tunes.....a unique interpretation of some of the most everyday things....those red Mary Jane shoes I used to wear, my honey in his black jeans, and the gift of a beautiful guitar. Some things just turn into special songs....at least we hope you will think so...stop on in, pull up the rocking chair, crank up the sound and have a listen...Oh and "Y'all come
back now, ya hear?"

-Laura Monk, High Cotton

“High Cotton” is Laura Monk, guitar, lead vocals, John Monk, electric bass, mandolin and back-up vocals and PJ Engeman, percussion, guitar and back-up vocals. We write and perform Americana/Folk original music, with sidesteps to Country, Blues and Folk Rock. We are a synthesis of each members past musical experiences, including; Folk, Jazz, Country, Celtic, Rock, 50’s Doo-Wop and even Storytelling. We like to say we are 'somewhere between Patsy and U2 and Cash and Coltrane….’ High Cotton started as a duo with Laura and John Monk in 2003. The cover band Laura was with had just broken up and her best music bud had moved to Chicago. Poor Laura had no one to play with…so she bought John a ‘Strat’ Bass for Christmas 2002 and told him to “get busy…cause we’re going to be playing out!” PJ was looking for a way to return to playing and performing and found Laura & John and joined to make a trio in the fall of 2005. He says ’I first saw Laura and John at a local festival and was stunned by the originality and power of their songs and Laura’s expressive voice. I basically begged them to let me join, claiming it was part of my work release program requirement to secure gainful employment!"

"First we need to thank Sheila and Chris for reminding us that inspiration can spring from lots of places and things – even a know-it-all, I’m-in-charge four legged sage.

Well we have ‘lived some life’ and we know this is an amazing time to be involved in music. The movement is indeed in high gear and we are thrilled to be right in the mix! Creating good music will always have talent, desire, sacrifice, integrity and hard work at it’s core. But the ‘T’ word - Technology - as evidenced by wonderful digital venues like Nubzilla – has opened up the path from ‘art’ to audience. It is incredible that our ability to make, find and share great music is only limited by our need to occasionally sleep. And it is not that many years ago that we would only have ‘met’ Sheila and Chris if we lived in the same town or happened to follow each other on stage!"
